Mastitis What Is Mastitis

Mastitis: What is Mastitis

Understanding Mastitis

Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue that usually occurs during breastfeeding.

It is often caused by a bacterial infection that enters the breast through a crack in the nipple.

Mastitis can also be caused by a blocked milk duct.

Symptoms of Mastitis

Symptoms of mastitis can include:

  • Breast pain, swelling and redness.
  • Fever and chills.
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as fatigue and muscle aches.
  • Pus or bloody discharge from the nipple.
  • Breast lumps.

Treatment for Mastitis

Treatment for mastitis usually includes antibiotics to clear the infection.

Over-the-counter pain relievers can also help to relieve pain and inflammation.

In some cases, surgery may be necessary to drain an abscess.

Preventing Mastitis

There are a number of things that can be done to help prevent mastitis:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after breastfeeding.
  • Breastfeed regularly, and make sure that your baby is latching on properly.
  • Avoid wearing tight bras or clothing that puts pressure on your breasts.
  • Massage your breasts to help prevent milk ducts from becoming blocked.

When to See a Doctor

It is important to see a doctor if you have any symptoms of mastitis, as it can lead to serious complications if left untreated.
